Meet Popi. Her parents were both born and raised on the island of Karpathos. They moved to the USA as newlyweds and returned to Greece when young Popi was 8 years of age. Popi remembers her childhood fondly, with memories of a fun, pure, safe and simple childhood. She now works with her family on their pride and joy – their charming Silene Villas on the island of Karpathos.
We’ve never been to Karpathos (the second largest of the Dodecanese islands), but it’s one of those untouched islands we’re dying to get to. And now with Popi’s local tips, this is one of our top #Summer2016 destinations!

What’s a normal day like for you?
I spend most of the day at my villas, socializing with my guests and helping them make plans for the day. I get a lot of joy out of making sure they see the best of the island! Afternoons are usually spent swimming and relaxing with friends.
Everyone knows that locals know the best swimming spots! Fill us in…
Some of my favourite beaches with beautiful crystal clear water for swimming are Diakoftis, Apella, and Kura Panagia. Of course, there arealso amazing private beaches that can only be accessed by boat!
What are some of your favourite places to eat on the island? Is there a local delicacy that we simply must try?
When it comes to food, it’s all about eating local! Taverna Perdika in Menetes village is an all-time favourite, along with Orea Karpathos in Pigadia. The great thing is that you can find great food all over the island. Calypso in Amoopi, Delphini in Finiki and Folia in Spoa are also fantastic! Posidon in Afiartis is a great spot for gourmet modern Greek cuisine. Basically, no matter where you visit on the island, you’ll eat the most delicious local produce and dishes.
When you visit Karpathos, make sure you try the local delicacy of Makarounes which is home-made pasta with caramelized onions. Delicious!
If you're thirsty, you can find the best cocktails at Anoi Bar, located in Karpathos town. Acropolis bar is also worth noting down!
Part of what we love about the Greek islands are the charming towns. What are some of your favourite villages?
I may be biased because it's where I am from, but Menetes village is absolutely beautiful. It's built up on a hill with small alleys and flowers everywhere (we have a huge feast on 15 August to celebrate the feast of the Virgin Mary, which is a perfect time to visit Karpathos). Olympos village is breathtaking and truly traditional...this is where you will see the most beautiful of all sunsets.
Tell us about your inspiration behind Silene Villas...
For me, Karpathos is home - so I will always think it is special! What other seem to love most about this island is that it is calm, beautiful, traditional and pure. It's the perfect place to visit for a beautiful Greek island getaway, without the hustle and bustle that some other islands have.
Our aim with Silene Villas is to give people a very special experience on Karpathos island. Our luxurious villas are carefully crafted and perched up a hill with panoramic views in a very peaceful setting. I am passionate about people seeing the best of this wonderful Greek island, so it's my pleasure to help them plan an unforgettable island experience.
