Blessed with a mild climate and extremely fertile soil, many food products made in Greece have been recognised with the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status by the EU. Many of the products and flavours stocked here at Homer St have PDO status, but what exactly does it mean?
PDO is the European recognition for an agricultural product or food whose entire production cycle, from raw material to finished product (processing and packaging), is carried in a given territory.
The combination of natural factors (raw materials, environmental characteristics and location) and human (production and traditional craft), make the product unique to a region and not reproducible elsewhere.
So far, 89 Greek products have been honoured with this designation, the most famous being Feta cheese.
Other products recognised as being uniquely produced in Greece include Chios Mastiha, Kymi Figs, Kozani Crocus, Cretan Rusks, Lesvos Ouzo and Kalamata Olives.
